The Role of the Honeybee in Our Environment

Ken will take us right into a beehive to better understand the inner workings within a beehive of these miraculous insects and the role they play in pollinating our plants and providing us with 40 percent of our food supply. You will see close up images of the bees and the roles they play within the colony. Ken will then have a table of items and products involved in the hobby of beekeeping and explain how the entire family can be involved in this exciting hobby. This will be followed in a honey tasting table with 15 different honey’s from around the world. You don’t want to miss this program!
Ken Warchol Bio:
Ken is a sixth generation beekeeper and received his first beehive at the age of five years old and has been a beekeeper ever since. Ken did many bee projects in high school and college. He became a teacher at Northbridge High School in 1974 and taught there for 37 years. He has served as the President,Vice -President,Bee School Director and Program Director for the Worcester County Beekeepers Association and is the longest serving member in the association with 70 years of service. Ken worked as a Massachusetts state apiary inspector for 45 years during the summer months when off from teaching. He ran 24 colonies of honeybees during a 5 year study under Dr. Lu at Harvard University. He was also involved in a 5 year study of honeybees under Dr. Pettis of the USDA to see how neonicinoid pesticice affect honeybees. He now enjoys running his own bee colonies as a relaxing hobby.
